Todd Hirsch, VP and Chief Economist, ATB Financial

Todd Hirsch is the Vice President and Chief Economist for ATB Financial, an Alberta-based financial institution that provides banking services and investment management expertise to over 600,000 clients.

He holds a BA Honours in Economics from UAlberta and an MA in Economics from UCalgary. For over 20 years, he has worked as an economist at numerous organizations including the Canadian Pacific Railway, the Canada West Foundation and the Bank of Canada. He also taught economics at the University of Calgary for nearly a decade, both in the Department of Economics as well as the Faculty of Continuing Education. He is currently an instructor in the Executive Education program at the Alberta School of Business, University of Alberta.

Todd is also the author of three books. His latest, “Spiders in Space: Successfully Adapting to Unwanted Change,” was released in 2017. He is also a strong advocate in the arts and culture community. He’s the board chair of the Calgary Arts Academy, and is on the boards of the Glenbow Museum and the Alberta Ballet.

Todd has been recognized as one of Alberta’s most influential people. He’s received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, the University of Alberta's Alumni Honour Award, and an honorary degree from Mount Royal University.

Building the City that People Love and Why It’s Critical in Today’s World

Building cities that people love has been identified as one of the most critical tasks for cities in the 21st century. In today’s world, people are prioritizing place quality like never before. It grows their sense of belonging and attachment to a city, which in turn is associated with improved outcomes for people, places and economies.

Dr. Loflin was the lead consultant in the ground-breaking US research that empirically established the critical components of the loved city and their relationship to human and economic outcomes. While consistent across cities, the three chief components of the loved city must be personalized to reflect the city’s character and narrative. Dr. Loflin will present the Place Science framework to show that skillsets of traditionalists and innovators in city building are both required to take cities into the 21st century and beyond.

Dr. Katherine Loflin is an award-winning, internationally-recognized trailblazer in place science: loved places and why they matter to people, places, and economies. For over a decade through her global consultancy, she has held leadership roles in some of the most ground-breaking place science projects in the world, earning her the moniker of The City Doctor.

Dr. Loflin is a leading global voice on cities, being the first to bring the topic of place science to the TED stage through two TEDx talks, her book “Place Match: The City Doctor’s Guide to Finding Where You Belong”, her former radio show “Place Matters”, and countless invited keynotes and city conversations around the world.

Dr. Loflin leads Strategic Partnerships for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship Lab. She also co-founded and serves as principal of Amazing Place Productions, an innovative production company specializing in telling the stories of places through original stage productions and community events.

Previously, she was awarded the international Place Marketing Award and was an invited member of the global Placemaking Leadership Council. She was also Program Director for the Knight Foundation in Miami, Florida, guiding the foundation’s charitable investment of millions of dollars annually into communities.

Dr. Loflin received her Masters and Ph.D. in Social Work from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her most recent engagements include keynoting Calgary’s Report to the Community and the Asia Pacific Cities Summit in Australia.

Lisa Bate, Global Sustainability Lead, B+H Architects & Chair, World Green Building Council

Lisa Bate is the Chair of the World Green Building Council and is regarded as one of Canada’s global ambassadors for sustainable design. Lisa was a representative to the United Nations’ Environmental Protection—Sustainable Buildings and Climate Initiative and is a former Director and Board Chair of the Canada Green Building Council. In 2018, Lisa was named the winner of Canada’s Clean16 as the top contributor for the past two years for the Building – Design, Development & Management sector at the Clean50 awards celebration. In her role as Global Sustainability Lead at B+H Architects, she oversaw the design team responsible for the new Net Zero Carbon Design Certified Joyce Centre for Partnership and Innovation at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario, an advanced net-zero energy, waste and water building, a Canadian pilot project for the CaGBC Zero Carbon Buildings and the WGBC Advancing Net Zero Initiatives. Lisa has demonstrated her management abilities and sustainability leadership globally, leading important projects in the Caribbean, China, India, Singapore, Malaysia, the US and Canada across a variety of sectors and scopes.

In this session, you will learn how to embrace risk and critically evaluate your projects. You will gain a greater understanding of how the construction team can work together to evaluate risk by looking at the following topics through the lens of the developer, designer and consultant:

  • Cost vs Performance - Evaluating the risk due to the building climate (inside and out)
  • When to push for the "best", or when is "good" is good enough
  • Constructability - It looks good on paper, but can you build it?
  • When to use "the latest and greatest" with respect to new systems and materials
  • Off shore products - Risk vs potential cost savings
  • How to mitigate the risk - When to dig in your heels and when to be flexible

Learning objectives:

  • Through past project building science failure investigations, you will gain a heightened awareness of areas that require careful attention to detail
  • You will gain a greater understanding of risk as it relates to constructability issues with common details, and the importance of working with the contractor to ensure that the details are constructed as designed.

Hillary Davidson, P.Eng. is the Engineering Manager for the Building Science group in Calgary. She has been with Williams Engineering Canada since July 2011. She earned her Bachelor of Science in the Integrated Engineering program at the University of British Columbia where she focused on Civil Engineering and building/construction related courses. While with Williams Engineering, Hillary has been a project engineer and project manager on various new construction and restoration projects including building envelope leak investigations, exterior cladding, roofing and window restorations, new construction consultation and quality assurance, and capital replacement fund projects. Hillary has a keen interest in sharing her building envelope knowledge through working with architects and owners, discussing constructability with contractors, and contributing to and publishing technical articles.

Randy Smith, P.Eng. is a senior building scientist and civil engineer with over 30 years of experience in the fields of building science and materials engineering. He has a broad, detailed knowledge of building envelope performance and design and has conducted an extensive number of projects of this type. Randy is a senior shareholder in the firm and is currently Practice Leader for Williams Engineering. He is a past president of the Alberta Building Envelope Council and a precedent member of the CSA A440 Window Standard committee. As a LEED® AP he has worked on several LEED® projects.

Randy has numerous technical building science articles published in Canadian construction and trade journals, and has provided numerous technical presentations for construction industry conferences and symposiums.

Enter WELL, Fitwel and Living Building Challenge that aim to increase the health and wellness of the occupants and by doing so hope to increase productivity, lower absenteeism and create a healthier individual.

Health and Wellness initiatives and strategies in workplace as well as, healthcare, education, and community have become a hot topic and focus in today's design community. This presentation will discuss and compare the 3 main health and wellness initiatives designers have at their disposal: WELL, Fitwel and Living Building Challenge certifications.

This presentation will also explore the concept of "Eudaimonia" which is a Greek word referring to the state of overall happiness and healthiness and how a well-designed environment can aim to "unlock our potential".

This collaborative session aims to be as inspirational as it is informative, leaving attendees with ideas and concepts they can apply to their next project.

Shelley Bowolin is a Health and Wellness Strategist, Consultant & Principal of ELEMENT7 design solutions. She has been practicing for over 17 years with a focus on sustainability and more recently helping clients achieve their Health and WELLness goals within the built environment, with WELL and Fitwel certifications.

She has designations as a LEED AP ID+C, WELL AP and Fitwel ambassador. Her recent passion is to inform and educate the design community and key stakeholders on the importance of influencing Health and Wellness in the built environment.

Leading the sustainable building team at Integral Group, Melanie Ross supports a wide range of projects ranging from LEED, WELL, Fitwel and other third-party certifications to energy management and existing building performance, while managing a growing portfolio in sustainability planning and policy development. Melanie's ten+ years of experience with recognized architecture, planning and engineering firms has brought her a deeper understanding of the industry and a respect for various stakeholder viewpoints.

Melanie has been speaking, educating and practicing on the subject of sustainability and health and wellness for over 10 years. She has designations as a LEED AP BD+C and WELL AP and currently serves as Chair of the CaGBC Alberta Chapter and as a member of the CaGBC Materials Technical Advisory Group.

W06 – Workshop: Integrated Project Delivery Action Guide and Myth Buster

Alberta is one of the North America's hottest Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) market places with over 25 projects initiated in just the last 4 years. This workshop, facilitated by a multi-disciplinary team including Owner, Architect and Contractor, will introduce participants to the Integrated Project Delivery: An Action Guide for Leaders which was developed in 2018 drawing on input from IPD experts from across North America. This guide provides no-nonsense instructions on some of the key considerations you should be aware of if contemplating participation in an IPD project. In addition to the guide, this session will explore the myths, and common challenges associated with this new delivery method including:

  • What commonly goes wrong
  • Complexities of assembling a team
  • Are there too many stakeholders at the table to be able to agree on one design?
  • Will I always be under budget?
  • Is it possible for everyone to work together to find innovative solutions to problems?
  • Is there a Canadian form of IPD agreement?

Attendees can expect interactive sessions, exercises and talks that will help identify and prepare them for challenges, pain points and benefits of this form of delivery that is rapidly advancing in Alberta and Ontario.
After this workshop, attendees will be able to:

  • Create a strategy for tangible next steps to implement Lean IPD in their projects
  • Describe the goals and processes in a typical IPD validation process and tailor them for their projects
  • Identify characteristics that would create a successful IPD team
  • Have a guideline on how to approach validation, financial management and cultural management of an IPD team
  • Anticipate what might go wrong in a Lean IPD project and what to do about it

Net-Zero and Zero-Carbon buildings will be key to meeting Canada’s carbon emission targets for both new construction and existing facilities. As the design and construction industries have evolved, multiple green certification schemes have emerged, and stakeholders are keen to understand what works best for their projects and how to reach their targets.

This presentation will define the pathways for different certification schemes such as CaGBC Zero Carbon Buildings, International Living Future Institute (ILFI) Zero Energy, and Passive House, as well as non-certification practices such as High-Performance Buildings. The talk will also address common financial and technical misinterpretations about net zero buildings. Join this session to understand how to deliver net-zero buildings, the costs to be expected, and the responsibilities that need to be assigned to each project stakeholder.

The next decade will be thrilling for net-zero building initiatives as the industry begins leveraging new technologies such as cloud computing and artificial intelligence. This will open a wide horizon of design decision flexibility, and results in cost, time, and energy savings. Before concluding, the presenter will touch on how these technologies are changing the way we tackle net-zero buildings and the implications for industry.

Bilal Maarouf is a mechanical engineer specialized in high performance building design and energy modelling. He has over 5 years of experience in the assessment and optimization of building systems, particularly to achieve near and net zero targets. Bilal brings into play a variety of modelling tools and innovative workflows to find the best fit solutions for the client and project’s needs. He has handled projects in design and operation stages along with other R&D work to develop computational analyses tools. His most recent project involved the techno-financial study of net zero buildings across Alberta for multiple building typologies.

The Canadian construction industry is now in the midst of significant change with lien act reform and the introduction of prompt payment and adjudication both provincially and federally. These changes, meant to improve the payment process and provide more efficient handling of construction disputes during the life of a project, will drive wholesale cultural change to our industry.

Canada is one of the few developed nations who have not yet adopted prompt payment legislation. Currently, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia have passed new prompt payment and adjudication legislation with BC, Alberta, Manitoba and New Brunswick now underway developing their own legislation.

This session will provide the history of prompt payment and adjudication in Canada, how it works and the challenges it faces during implementation. The Ontario model, and its challenges, will be discussed as it is now law.

Mr. Matt Ainley, the Chair of the General Contractors Alliance of Canada, and Richard Venerus, Founder and Principal of Venerus Advisory Partners, will bring the latest in recent developments from across the construction industry including a question and answer period at the end of the panel discussion.

Matt Ainley is a construction executive and consultant with 37 years experience in the Canadian Institutional, Commercial and Industrial general contracting market place and resides in Toronto with his wife of 36 years, Susan.

Matt worked with Bird Construction as Senior Vice President, a publicly traded construction company from 2012 to June 2017. At Bird, he was a member of the senior executive team and had P&L responsibility for several business districts. He was also part of the acquisition team, played a key role in creating and rolling out the strategic plan and was the executive in charge for several public private partnerships for the company.

Prior to Bird, Matt was the Executive Vice President of Carillion Canada's building division from 2009 to 2011. Carillion Canada is a subsidiary of Carillion plc, a publicly traded UK construction company. Matt joined Carillion as a result of the sale of his company, Vanbots Construction Corporation in the fall of 2008.

Matt was the President & COO and a shareholder of Vanbots Construction Corporation, a privately held general contracting company with $750 million in annual sales. Matt worked for the company for 25 years and held positions of Superintendent, Chief Estimator, Project Manager and Executive Vice President.

Currently, Matt is the Chair of the General Contractors Alliance of Canada, is a Director at Scarborough Hospital Network and represented the Ontario General Contractors Association on the Attorney General’s Lien Reform Act Committee in Ontario.

Richard Venerus, Founder and Principal at Venerus Advisory Partners. Venerus Advisory Partners (VAP) https://veneruspartners.com/ is a professional advisory (established in 2011) with a goal of helping its private and public sector clients have more productive and profitable business relationships. VAP combines the storied expertise of its partners with the application of a unique, collaborative approach to the management of commercial relationships.

Richard has over 20 years of experience in procurement, contracting and commercial management in a diverse set of industries, including construction. He is a qualified (now recovering) lawyer, certified in Construction Law and holds a MBA from the Schulich School of Business. Richard is professionally trained or certified in a number of related disciplines: Project Management, Change Management, Construction Contract Administration, Adult Learning and Development, Mediation, Arbitration - and unique ISO standard 44001 for Collaborative Working.

Richard is a national instructor for the Supply Chain Management Association, the de facto standard for SCM training in Canada. Richard a former Board Member for the Project Management Association of Southern Alberta as well as co-author of the Construction Owners Association of Alberta Contracting Best Practice.

This presentation will explore the relationship between lighting, human biology, and well-being.

Research in the field of chronobiology, the science of biological rhythms, has shown that light is a synchronizing agent that regulates the region of our brain that controls our circadian rhythms. This in turn affects multiple dimensions of our well-being including mood, alertness, and physical health and recovery from injury, and more.

Findings on specific light wavelengths and colour have further enhanced our understanding of how light and illumination have both a biological and behavioral impact on us. Providing an overview of the science and research, we will demonstrate how illumination of a space can impact users and occupants through the relationship between chronobiology and the science of lighting.

Finally, we will unpack "physiological architecture," and its implications for industry professionals. What could we gain from considering how illumination levels, wavelengths, and perceived colour impact our health, mood, productivity, and cognitive acuity? How can we account for human biology and the science of light when designing to support the well-being of occupants and users?

Sunny Ghataurah is one of Western Canada's leading electrical engineers and lighting designers. He has over 25 years of experience in the construction industry, and he is licensed in BC, AB, and Washington State.

His skills in designing electrical and architectural lighting systems have been applied across many sectors, including healthcare, education, hospitality, civic, recreational, retail, corporate office, industrial and residential.

Sunny's projects have won numerous awards including Awards of Merit from the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies British Columbia (ACEC-BC), and a Special Citation and an Award of Excellence for Interior Lighting Design from the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IES). In 2014, Business in Vancouver honoured Sunny with a Top Forty under 40 Award.

A passionate pioneer of sustainable design, Sunny's portfolio includes 100+ LEED projects, three Living Buildings and several renewable energy projects. Recognized as an industry thought leader, Sunny was invited to speak at the Alberta Electrical Inspectors Conference, BUILDEX Calgary, BUILDEX Edmonton, IES Edmonton and the Alberta Safety Codes Council.

Victor Quezada is a Lighting Artist at AES Engineering. Trained in Germany at Zumtobel GmbH and Die Lichtplanner, Victor has specialized in lighting design since 2008, when he founded Render Light & Planning. Victor holds an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts and has a strong background in visual and conceptual art. He has led the lighting design for numerous projects with a high level of technical and architectural ambition, including The Exchange, a 31-storey LEED Platinum commercial tower heritage and restoration; Kettner & Ash, a 36-storey mixed-use tower and public plaza in San Diego, California; The Adler University Vancouver campus; The Temple of Light in Kooteney Bay, BC and The Polygon Gallery. His design and product expertise contributes to a project's overall beauty and sustainability, and facilitates the aesthetic integration of the lighting solution with the overall design and physical environment.

Scott Crews brings 20 years of experience to Dovetail PM. He is a skilled leader who has effectively managed a variety of construction projects across Canada throughout his career.

Scott’s in-depth understanding of Project Management and construction has come from the diverse experience gained from working for three large workplace management companies in Canada. Having consulted on behalf of a variety of major client accounts spanning across the country, Scott spent some time in Toronto working on the RBC team developing their new design and construction standards which were rolled out in 2006. The balance of his career has been focused in the Calgary marketplace. Scott’s background in architecture and cabinet making has enabled him to effectively and successfully manage both design-build projects and major interior tenant improvement projects. Brent Ellergodt is an award winning Calgary based Custom Home Designer.

Brent’s firm works with private home and landowners as well as custom home builders and developers. His ultimate goal is to design homes that reflect each of our clients, and their unique needs.

He brings 32 + years of expertise in design to each of our projects - be it for a Custom Home, Semi or Multi Family Project, Vacation Home or an Extensive Renovation.

Brent is a Certified Residential Designer, LEED AP for Homes and a Sustainable Building Advisor.

Lara Murphy started her first construction business at 16 by handing out flyers door to door to advertise. This business, Handy Student Maintenance started with small jobs and Lara was proud she could fit two lawn mowers in the trunk of her car! During her studies at Mount Allison University, she had opportunity to run several additional businesses within the construction industry and traveling internationally while playing soccer magnified her love of architecture.

Today she is the co-founder of Ryan Murphy Construction; and no, Ryan Murphy is not a man. In fact, its Calgary’s only commercial construction firm owned by two women. In 2008, Lara co-founded Ryan Murphy Construction Inc. with business partner Karen Ryan after meeting on a construction site in Banff with the motive to create a more approachable, transparent and educational construction firm within their industry.

Working with brands like the Sheraton, UNDRCARD, Telus Spark, Junction 9, Village Ice Cream, Gravity Café and The Vin Room, they have been recognized as leaders and featured by Business in Calgary Magazine, Growth 500, Canadian Business, Alberta Venture and MacLean’s Magazine. Heather has been involved in various aspects of building envelope consulting, including new construction and remediation projects that include the investigation and repair of existing building envelope systems from initial visual reviews, exploratory work, and condition assessments, to the design of repair details, writing of technical specifications, issuing of bid documents, and field review during construction. Over her 8 year career, Heather’s remediation project experience ranges from localized system replacements such as windows, balcony waterproofing, and roofing to the full recladding of buildings including the replacement of the majority of the cladding systems.

Heather holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Calgary, with a minor in Structural Engineering. She is a Member with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA), a member of the Alberta Building Envelope Council (ABEC) and an Alberta Chapter Member of the Canadian Green Building Council (CaGBC).

The Making a Building (in the future) team (consisting of ncx+, Bird, MCW Hemisphere, Entuitive, Arpi’s North, Mod Panel) collaborated from start-to-finish in the development of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) HQ building in Edmonton via a Design Build contract.

The team came together using technology such as Revit 2018 within BIM360 Design, Navisworks, dRofus, and Revizto. During design, the team used a “Unified” model (all teams in one single file) from design development all the way to construction documents. Navisworks and Revizto were used for clash detection and issue management, while dRoufs was used to manage AUPE’s large functional program to ensure that all needs were met in our Revit file.

The project was phased in two phases Core & Shell and Fit-Up. The Core and Shell model was developed to a Level of detail (LOD) of 200 to 300. When the packages went out for tender, the model was broken out into “Federated” files to allow the major trades to take their part of the job and create their own models. These models were further development into LOD 350 plus. Once the trade’s models were complete, they were linked into a Fidelity model for coordination and shop drawings. The models were used as a 3d shop drawing review along with traditional 2D shop drawings.

By collecting the project team together, this panel will offer the opportunity to see and hear how BIM delivered new value across the whole design build project team, from start to end.

Scott is a multi-skilled Architectural Technologist with comprehensive experience in design, construction documentation, and construction administration. He continually displays a proven ability to lead project teams to successfully deliver complex and challenging building solutions. Scott focuses on applying innovative solutions to each project utilizing the most cutting edge software and add-ins to our Building Information Modelling to automate tasks and create efficiency in our processes. He is paramount in the delivery and development of Model Based Project Delivery in architecture at ncx+ and our move away form archaic 2D content. Scott is continuing to develop his skills as a contract administrator and works collaboratively with the construction team to find
amicable solutions to issues as they arise on site. With a construction background from his early career, Scott is as comfortable in the trenches as he is at his computer and is well respected by the teams he works on.

David Kedzierski, Engineer-in-Training, has been part of the MCW Hemisphere’s electrical team for over five years. With experience in commercial, municipal and institutional facilities, he has an excellent understanding of electrical system loads, lighting and lighting control systems as well as various other low voltage systems such as data networks, security and fire alarm. As an active listener who collaborates with the project team he brings a pragmatic approach to design strategies to meet Client’s expectations while respecting the budget realities of any project.
Working closely with teams of a contractors, owners, and other consultants during design and construction, he has leveraged and adopted a wide range of technologies to facilitate a more streamlined approach to designing and constructing electrical building systems.

Backed by over 25 years of industry experience, Mohammad is an Associate at Entuitive with a practical approach to problem solving and a drive to see things through to completion. During 14 years of engineering practice in Iran, he worked in various positions culminating to leadership position in multi-disciplined firms. In 2007, Mohammad and his family moved to Canada and began his career in consulting engineering. He has also completed his Master’s degree in Structural Engineering with a focus on composite materials in construction from Dalhousie University in 2010.

In 2016, Mohammad joined Entuitive and started the Edmonton office. Over last few years, he led the structural team in delivering several projects, including AUPE Head Office. He believes and enjoys the application of BIM in advanced collaborative project delivery environment.

Aaron has been in the Construction Industry for 20 years, working in many roles. He began his career as a journeyman tradesman, then progressed into a design and drafting role, estimator, project manager, BIM consultant/educator, and then to his present role as BIM Manager at Arpi’s North Inc. in Edmonton, Alberta. Aaron hopes to bring together his construction experience and his passion for technologies to create new and exciting opportunities to help advance the Industry into the digital age.

Keith Tilley loves change... and a good challenge. Whether it be a personal change, or an industry shake up, he is interested in taking part. As a lifelong participant in the construction industry, from apprentice carpenter to business owner, Keith has developed a vast and deep understanding of the commercial construction market. Keith dove in headfirst to apply his business background and construction experience to the Mod Panel team to create smart pre-fabricated building solutions. Keith is currently responsible for the strategic and business outcomes of Mod Panel Solutions, which specializes in providing off-site solutions and management of prefabricated building envelope panels.

Russell Truesdell P.Eng., Mechanical Designer brings eight years of mechanical engineering experience to the MCW Hemisphere Team. His project experience includes involvement in commercial and government infrastructure projects that span from proposal to construction administration. He has an excellent understanding of mechanical load calculations and the capability to communicate concepts and details using software tools such as AutoCAD and Revit. Russell is a strong communicator who collaborates closely with the project team to design mechanical systems reflective of the goals and objectives of his Clients.

W15 – Green Line LRT – The Transition from Planning to Implementation

The Green Line LRT is a $4.9 billion investment in Calgary’s future that will provide more options for Calgarians to move around the city. The vision for Green Line was approved by Calgary’s City Council in 2017 and was established through a comprehensive planning and design process that integrated significant public input.

Since 2017, the Green Line has transitioned from a visionary plan to an implementation project. Through the implementation phase the design has continued to advance and has contributed to a more refined understanding of construction risks and cost estimates. As the design evolved for the most complex part of the project, a 4km stretch of underground track and stations in the Centre City, the project team recognized that the design was not fully meeting the vision for the project and that there were challenges to meet the project budget. To address this, the project team proposed changes to the construction procurement process, which allow work to be paused in the Centre City to provide time to revisit the original vision, share learnings with Calgarians, and determine the best course to finalize the design.

This presentation will share a status update on the Green Line LRT project and upcoming steps in the implementation process.

Graham is managing the stakeholder relations program for the Green Line LRT project. The mandate of this team is to help Calgarians prepare for and manage the potential impacts of this significant infrastructure building project. Graham has implemented a number of public realm improvement projects in Calgary’s Centre City. His approach to successfully implementing projects is through an interest-based stakeholder engagement process. This process encourages both stakeholders and project teams to share interests, to better understand needs, hopes and challenges, and to work together to contribute to project success.

Stephen has specialized in BRT and LRT planning and implementation for the past 11 years working within various positions at Calgary Transit. He was the lead Project Manager for the 7th Ave Refurbishment Project, a revitalization and infrastructure upgrade to Calgary’s downtown transit corridor. Stephen also helped facilitate the turnover of Calgary’s West LRT extension and helped lead functional planning and design for Calgary’s new MAX BRT network. Stephen is currently overseeing the Engineering and Design stream for Calgary’s Green Line LRT which includes the development of the technical project requirements and low-floor LRV procurement.

Vectorworks Architect is the ultimate software from sketch to BIM. From conceptual design, to fully coordinated BIM models, to construction documents, it’s the versatile solution pulling everything together and increasing your efficiency. In this seminar, attendees will look at the link between digital and physical prototyping by exploring specific examples of architects who are using both to achieve their goals. Using Vectorworks we’ll explore how algorithmic modeling can create rapid prototypes that can help increase design efficiency.

Initially educated at BCIT in the Structural Drafting trades program, Mike’s work experience started with detailing mill and refinery conveying systems. Shifting to BCIT’s Building Technology program, and time with the RAIC Syllabus, opened up job experiences with some of Vancouver’s long-standing architectural firms. Working in a Senior Technologist capacity on a number of care facilities and multi-family projects for over 20 years, revealed to Mike to importance of project coordination and delivery in BIM workflows.

This experience, and combined involvement with world-wide design software developers Vectorworks, Bluebeam and Solibri, provides Mike with relevant insight and expertise that enables the design clients he works with to develop their BIM workflow and project deliverables.

The roots of Manasc Isaac's Reimagine initiative grow deep into the firm's history. Founded on the premise that “the greenest building is the one that already exists”, Reimagine seeks to transform existing buildings into sustainable, healthy and engaging spaces where humans can live, work and play.

Many buildings from the 60s and 70s were built with efficiency in mind, however their performance has not stood the test of time. They are now at the stage of their lives where we may recapitalize, reinvest and reimagine how these buildings perform from the point of view of energy efficiency, interior environment, and urban environment.

  • What can we do to reduce the impact of existing buildings whilst extending their lives at the same time? 
  • How can we change their systems, improve the envelope performance and increase their efficiency?
  • How can we make them more beautiful, appealing and able to improve their urban environment?

By combining building science knowledge with the art of architecture, we can reimagine existing buildings and answer these questions.

This presentation will illustrate how several different building scales and typologies have been reimagined by Manasc Isaac. The speaker will share a variety of insight and lessons from three different projects, including Memorial Composite High School, Servus Credit Union and WSP Place, and guide the audience through how they were given new lives by the Reimagine initiative.

Many strategies used to reduce a building's energy use can also have a positive impact on occupant comfort. In this session, we will turn the tables and focus on occupant comfort first. Participants will learn how, by analyzing and designing for occupant comfort, energy and greenhouse gas emission reductions follow.

Participants will learn about the fundamentals of thermal and visual comfort and explore design features which improve occupant comfort and reduce energy use. We will present specific examples such as: a real-world thermal comfort example in a high-rise residential unit, employing natural ventilation to reduce cooling energy, improving thermal comfort using high performance building envelopes, and considering quality daylight and glare control to optimize glazing design.

Alexander Tansowny, EIT LEED© AP BD+C is passionate about designing and optimizing high performance buildings. He leads building performance modeling work in the Calgary studio of DIALOG, an integrated architecture and engineering firm. With an engineering background in mechanical system and building envelope design, Alexander has experience analyzing occupant comfort, daylight, and natural ventilation from an occupant perspective.

Recent projects include the University of Calgary's MacKimmie Complex Redevelopment, a high-performance building in the CaGBC's Zero Carbon Building Standard. As an occupant-centered project, the design team pushed the envelope to provide comfortable natural ventilation year-round. Alexander contributed his deep understanding of occupant thermal comfort and the use of detailed simulations to facilitate the final design.

Matt Grace is well known in the green building industry for his advocacy of sustainability both at work and in his private life. With over 25 years of experience, Matt was recognized in 2017 as one of the most exceptional professionals in the green building industry, and honoured with GBCI’s most prestigious designation award as a LEED Fellow, for his significant contributions to the green building community.

In addition to his leadership in LEED, he became one of the first WELL Accredited professionals in Alberta and is working on the first WELL project in Alberta. He has been active in the promotion of other third-party verified green building rating systems such as Living Building Challenge, Built Green, Green Globes, CaGBC’s Net Zero Carbon certification and more.

Matt’s work and credibility in the industry has been proven time and again by his outstanding leadership in the green building movement. He motivates all of us to continue the charge forward in creating sustainable, healthy and connected communities through the built environment.

Matt has worked on the research and delivery of sustainable solutions in Europe and Canada and he has presented on sustainability around the world.

Kim Rishel has been in the construction industry for over 17 years in varying roles. As a LEED Coordinator, she successfully completed the LEED documentation for the first LEED Platinum project in Alberta, The Child Development Centre. Her next challenge was developing and managing a sustainability department for EllisDon. In this role she provided technical support, training and education on green building practices and LEED projects across Western Canada. Managing this department gave her the opportunity to work on many LEED projects including South Health Campus, EEEL (U of C), Calgary Airport Expansion, and many (40+) more. She volunteered and worked with the CaGBC on the EBOM Adaptation Task Force, as a SME for the New Examination and Credentialing Program, and worked on the Materials TAG for 5 years. In her role at the Zoo, she helped promote an attempt at the first LBC Petal Certification project in Alberta by leading and encouraging the team to pursue this initiative for the Panda Passage project.

Stacey Sarauer was the project manager for PCL Construction for the Panda Passage Exhibit. Stacey has eight years of experience in the construction industry and holds a civil engineering degree with a professional engineering license and is an accredited LEED Green Associate. In her role, she was responsible for the overall administrative direction and process coordination during all phases of the project. She oversaw the Living Building Challenge requirements and coordinated with the Calgary Zoo, project consultants and subtrades to ensure the requirements were met and the certification was achieved.

This panel session will include discussions with industry leaders in Building Code Consulting, Architecture and Interior Design in relation to the new building code for the province of Alberta.

The panel discussion will include an overview of the architectural and design changes to the National Building Code – 2019 Alberta Edition (NBC-AE), which will replace the 2014 Alberta Building Code this year. The majority of changes reviewed in this session will focus on Division B, Part 3 of the NBC-AE.

Panel experts will discuss the implications of the new building code for each profession and essentials for design and construction projects to remain in compliance. Panelists will also discuss the future of building codes in relation to their disciplines and high-level project scopes.

Kim Karn brings over 17 years of experience working with provincial, national & international building codes and standards. Kim refined her skills as a code consultant in Ontario and subsequently Alberta with Larden Muniak Consulting Inc. Kim provided in-house consulting services for Riddell Kurcazba Architecture Engineering Interior Design Ltd. before incorporating her own consulting firm, Kimberly Karn Consulting Inc., in October 2015.

With this knowledge, Kim provides analysis of compliance for existing and proposed building designs, focusing on life and fire-safety. Kim has performed code reviews, developed alternative solutions and has conducted audits and life safety studies for many projects ranging from commercial, residential, health care, arenas and industrial buildings.

Kim has developed and presented continuing education seminars related to building code and life safety subject matter since 2004. Kim has presented seminars for Alberta WoodWorks!, BUILDEX, IIDEX, Interior Designers of Canada, Safety Codes Council and various architectural firms.

Jaime Gould is the Principal of IDEALAB Licensed Interior Design Inc. and an Adjunct Professor at MRU in the Interior Design Department. Having worked with the building code for over 20 years, Jaime has developed projects through numerous versions of the ABC and related sections of the Fire codes as they pertain to Interior Design. Jaime understands that with each update comes challenges in onboarding clients and building operators to identify how these changes can impact buildings that are no longer compliant when facing renovations or new tenant fit-ups. Having practiced in Calgary for 17 years she has had opportunity to work with the local Authorities having jurisdiction on complex fire, life and safety issues requiring interpretation and compromise.

Nabil Habashy brings with him 20 years of experience and passion to the field of architecture and building codes, with international architectural & sustainability experience in Dubai (UAE), Qatar, Egypt, Canada, USA. Nabil brings extensive experience in Canadian Building & Energy codes, certified as Canadian Registered Building Official, Building Safety Codes Officer and a member of the Alberta building official association.

Nabil is a registered professional member and a council member with the Alberta Association of Architects (AAA). Nabil worked for the City of Edmonton as a commercial and residential safety codes officer and joined Alberta Government- Ministry of Municipal Affairs as a building technical advisor since 2011.

Nabil develops courses and exams for the building inspectors, and presents several presentations in many conferences and regional meetings for building inspectors.

Nabil is LEED accredited professional since 2008.

Nabil volunteers in different associations and institutes to advocate for the practice of architecture and code compliance.

Ulrik Seward is Managing Chief, Approvals at the City of Calgary. His role is to oversee the group that issues all the Building Permits in Calgary. Ulrik is a provincially certified Safety Codes Officer and has worked with the City of Calgary for 14 years. He currently sits on the National Research Council’s Standing Committee on Use and Egress, which is responsible for the development of Part 3 of the National Building Code. He also represents the City of Calgary on the Safety Codes Council’s Building Sub-Council, whose mandate it is to recommend changes to codes and standards to the province.

Lindsay Scott is passionate about creating environments where people are supported in their roles and respected for who they are as individuals. As the Chair of the Women in Construction committee for the Calgary Construction Association, she leads an amazing group of people driven to support the success of women in the construction industry by offering networking opportunities, mentorship, and industry knowledge in a diverse and inclusive community.

By day, Lindsay is a Senior Surety Underwriter at Aviva Canada Inc. where she helps contractors make money by providing the bonds they need to secure work across the country. When she’s not helping out contractors, she applies her financial acumen to aid energy and mining companies with fulfilling their reclamation security requirements.

By night, Lindsay helps raise two minions with her wonderful and supportive husband, Ben. After bedtime, Lindsay gives her time to help build the future of other children by volunteering with the Lake Ridge Community Church Youth group.

In 2012, Avree Bujaczek moved from Saskatchewan to take the B Sc. Construction Project Management (CPM) program at SAIT. After graduating from the inaugural year of the program in 2015, Avree has worked for two of Canada’s top General Contractors, who have supported her involvement with the Calgary Construction Association’s Young Construction Leaders Committee, where she currently sits as the Chair. In keeping a strong relationship with SAIT, Avree also sits as a delegate on the B Sc. CPM Program Advisory Committee, which provides feedback and assists in the ongoing development of the program. In 2017 Avree was awarded an Outstanding Young Alumna Award from SAIT for her continuous dedication to improving the construction community in Calgary. In her spare time, Avree enjoys in competing (against herself) in various road and trail races and also quarterbacks a women’s touch football team.

Lara Murphy started her first construction business at 16 by handing out flyers door to door to advertise. This business, Handy Student Maintenance started with small jobs and Lara was proud she could fit two lawn mowers in the trunk of her car! During her studies at Mount Allison University, she had opportunity to run several additional businesses within the construction industry and traveling internationally while playing soccer magnified her love of architecture.

Today she is the co-founder of Ryan Murphy Construction; and no, Ryan Murphy is not a man. In fact, its Calgary’s only commercial construction firm owned by two women. In 2008, Lara co-founded Ryan Murphy Construction Inc. with business partner Karen Ryan after meeting on a construction site in Banff with the motive to create a more approachable, transparent and educational construction firm within their industry.

Working with brands like the Sheraton, UNDRCARD, Telus Spark, Junction 9, Village Ice Cream, Gravity Café and The Vin Room, they have been recognized as leaders and featured by Business in Calgary Magazine, Growth 500, Canadian Business, Alberta Venture and MacLean’s Magazine. Karen Skjei is a Project Management professional experienced in the Calgary construction and development industry. Equipping Commercial Building Owners to Act on Climate Change:

Building awareness of the City of Edmonton’s three commercially focused programs that offer incentives and support for businesses. The programs include the Building Energy Benchmarking program, the Corporate Climate Leaders program, and the newest program, the Commercial Energy Efficiency Incentive program. Participants will gain knowledge aimed at tackling unique barriers to organizations in becoming more energy efficient. This portion of the presentation will help participants address knowledge gaps about commercial building energy and GHG impacts, equip building owners/operators with tools and frameworks to understand and manage their emissions, and lastly, provide financial incentives to improve the business case for investing in energy efficiency and greenhouse gas reduction.

How to Implement an Energy Retrofit Program for a Large Building Portfolio:

It’s tough enough for the owner of a single building to navigate the whole process from knowing your building’s energy use to identifying energy retrofit options, to pulling the trigger and proceeding with the retrofits, etc. etc.! But what are owners of big building portfolios supposed to do? This portion of the presentation will show participants the methodology and process that the City of Edmonton is taking to develop their energy retrofit program. Their approach to developing a measurement and verification program that will help to validate the actual energy and cost savings, and GHG reductions that have been achieved will also be discussed.

Lisa Dockman is Senior Environmental Project Manager within the Energy Transition Unit at the City of Edmonton. Her work focuses on the planning and implementation of initiatives that mitigate energy use and greenhouse gas emissions associated with Edmonton’s commercial and residential sectors. She is responsible for Edmonton’s Building Energy Benchmarking Program, Corporate Climate Leaders Program among others. Lisa is a University of Alberta alumnus of both the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Education in addition to being a LEED Green Associate and a Certified Professional Facilitator with the International Association of Facilitators. Previously, she worked at the University of Alberta’s Office of Sustainability delivering a suite of educational programs and capacity-building initiatives for students, faculty and staff. Owners and builders often have preconceived ideas of what building a Passive House means aesthetically and physically. A successful Passive House Project may look simple, but the process of design and execution is the result of a complex sharing of ideas and technical expertise. A collaborative design process that includes all stakeholders is critical for a successful Passive House project, but this is an unfamiliar process for planning and building.

This presentation will introduce real life projects from across residential and large buildings. Projects may be of similar size and shape, share many of the same attributes, and appear to confirm to Passive House requirements, but which one is certifiable?

Heritage buildings are essential pieces of vibrant urban fabric. They tell stories about the past & leave legacies for the future in ways that new buildings often don't. Consequentially, they also require a different approach to their management.

In recognition of the unique needs of the 28 heritage buildings in its portfolio of facilities, The City of Calgary established The Heritage Buildings Program to distinguish and optimize how these assets are managed. As a result, The City of Calgary is now emerging as leader in the program management of municipally-owned historic assets.

This presentation outlines the repeatable principles, processes, and practices of the City's Heritage Building Program, and illustrates the iterative lessons being learned with case-studies of select projects within the program.

Cameron Gillies is an architect, currently with The City of Calgary's Facility Management business unit. He leads a pre-design team that plans construction programs, including the rehabilitation of heritage buildings.

Cameron believes that well-designed environments are fundamental to social, economic, and environmental prosperity.

During his 20-year career, Cameron has worked with some of Canada's best-recognized architects, and contributed to over $3bn worth of design and construction projects. He has also mentored, taught, and lectured at institutions across the country.

He volunteers in the communities he lives in, and enjoys adventures in the mountains with his family. Also, coffee, whiskey, and anything on two wheels.

Mr. Cariou has been involved in historic building rehabilitation for 30 years, starting as a carpenter working in the renovation industry. He holds a First-Class Honour's Degree in Art History from the University of Alberta and studied architecture and cultural resource management at the University of Calgary.

For 8 years, Mr. Cariou was a Heritage Planner for the City of Edmonton where he authored and helped implement their first Historic Resource Management Plan. In 1996 the Edmonton heritage team was awarded a Heritage Canada Achievement award for that work. In 1999 Mr. Cariou left the City of Edmonton to work in heritage conservation in the private sector in Edmonton, the U.K. and Italy.

He returned to Canada in the fall of 2003 to begin working for the City of Calgary. In 2008 he authored the Calgary Heritage Strategy that established a strategic, long-term approach to support the preservation of Calgary's historic resources.

In 2010 The City of Calgary was awarded the Alberta Provincial Award for Municipal Heritage Preservation and received an Honourable Mention from Heritage Canada for the Prince of Wales Prize for Municipal Heritage Leadership.

In 2014 Mr. Cariou left the Senior Heritage Planner position and joined Facilities Management as the Heritage Buildings Program Manager. He is responsible for the development and delivery of a program to rehabilitate and sustain The City of Calgary's historical buildings.

A seasoned designer on the Calgary scene, Jacqui McFarland has ‘seen it all’ in terms of design trends and the way our economic, social, and political climate has shaped the way we design. An award-winning designer with more than three decades of experience, Jacqui’s career has spanned a number of realms, including commercial design, academia, visual communication design, business owner, and now Senior Interior Design Associate with Stantec Architecture.

Jacqui was bestowed the title of Professor Emerita by Mount Royal University where she served as Department Chair of the Interior Design program. She presently serves on the Council for Interior Design Accreditation Standards Committee, and is a Board Member for Calgary Reads, which is dedicated to helping children read with confidence and joy.

The Living Building Challenge is the most ambitious, advanced measure of sustainability in the built environment today. With its focus on big-picture outcomes like net-positive energy and water use, it has been stubbornly out of reach for many projects in our current investment environment. Many believe this will change in the future as the costs of climate change reshape that thinking.

But in the meantime, how can today's projects reach toward this standard? One new option is the related Core Green Building Certification, released in 2019. It is a simple framework that outlines the 10 best-practices that a project must achieve to be considered green or sustainable. The purpose is to fill the gap between the highest levels of established programs (like LEED), and the aspirations of the Living Building Challenge.

Think of it as "training wheels" for the Living Building Challenge, developed by the same institute.

This session will introduce the 10 imperatives of the Core Green Building Certification, explore the challenges, and provide opportunities to discuss how these challenges can be met.

Bill Black is the President & COO of the Calgary Construction Association which is celebrating its 75th Anniversary in 2019. Prior to taking over the position in late 2018 Bill’s career in the Design & Construction Industry spanned nearly 40 years in a broad variety of roles and sectors.

Beginning in Scotland as a Quantity Surveyor Bill moved to Canada in 1991. After working with Helyar and Associates and then as an estimator with Skyline Roofing, he joined Smed in 1999 in their architectural product division just prior to their acquisition by Haworth a global manufacturer of office systems furniture and . Over the next years Bill’s role grew and his during his travels across North America working on projects and business development activities with numerous blue-chip companies, industry influencers and stakeholders.

Bill returned to Skyline in fall 2012 and, as EVP of Commercial at Skyline Building Envelope Solutions, was part of the leadership team that was instrumental in facilitating a turnaround and sale of the business in 2015.

Following starting his own consulting business in 2015, Mindnetworkx Inc, Bill took over the role of President and CEO of Brxton Construction LP, a masonry contractor with offices in Calgary, Edmonton, Regina and Vancouver. He led a strategic reorganization of the business in support of an orderly wind down and closeout on behalf of the owners.

Bill also spent a number of months with Allied Contractors as VP of Business Development assisting with a review of estimating and establishing business development strategies for the commercial drywall company.

No stranger to the challenges of the commercial construction sector and a highly adaptable individual, as evidenced by his varied career, Bill always brings a fresh perspective to the challenges and opportunities that he is involved with. A frequent keynote speaker and participant at many industry events, a constant champion of change and an outspoken advocate for a better construction industry, Bill believes in always pushing for opportunity no matter what the challenges may be.

Bill was a founding member of the Mindshift consortium, an industry think tank with contributors from all over North America, and as part of that group he co-authored “The Commercial Real Estate Revolution” detailing the issues and opportunities facing the design & construction industry. Mindshift won the Corenet Global Innovators Award in 2009.

Bill joined the Calgary Construction Association Board of Directors in 2012 and was recognized in 2014 as CCA Person of the Year, recognizing his industry work over his career. Bill was elected Chair CCA for 2018 leading up to taking over his current role as President and COO and along with the great team at the association is looking forward to writing the next chapter in the history of this great organization.

Chris Dambrowitz joined the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) in 2014 as AVP - Research and Innovation. He has been instrumental in the development and launch of NAIT’s Industry Solutions initiative, and in establishing NAIT’s Productivity and Innovation Centre, a 200,000 sq.ft. facility supporting industry clients through applied research facilities, advanced manufacturing labs, acceleration spaces for business innovation, and corporate workforce training services.

Prior to joining NAIT, Chris was Director of Strategic Initiatives with the Biorefining Conversion Network (BCN), an industrial-academic collaborative research network. He was the founding Program Director of the Alberta Prion Research Institute, and later served as Director of Planning and Development with the Alberta Research & Innovation Authority (ARIA) Secretariat - providing domain expertise on global bioindustrial strategies, innovation policy, and business support programs. Chris brings technology development experience from his time in the bioanalytical and biotechnology industries in both Canada and the US. Chris has a PhD in Molecular Biology and Genetics from the University of Alberta.

Allan Partridge is active as a “player/coach” of a talented group of colleagues focused on “Speed to Market”. Through highly integrated teams, the emphasis is on satisfying client needs by reducing capital requirements, accelerating the schedule, preserving quality and maximizing life cycle cash flows. Moving beyond the current IPD methodologies ncx+ looks at Making Buildings rather than traditional Design & Construction. Allan also sees leveraging technologies to eliminate wasteful intermediaries to go directly from File > Fabrication > Field.

Allan has been the recipient of numerous design awards over the last three decades and was personally honored as a recipient of the Alberta Centennial Medal in 2005 in recognition of outstanding service to the people and province of Alberta. Allan is the past president of the Canada BIM Council and has lectured nationally and internationally at conferences since 2004 speaking about BIM, IPD and other related topics.

Reva Bond Ramsden, BA, BSc, MBA. Before joining SAIT in 2009, Reva had a multi-disciplinary, progressive career in hospitality, tourism, manufacturing, health care and industrial construction. Working as a Contract Administrator for Aecon Industrial for over 5 years she was an integral member of the build team on multi-million dollar projects for owners such as Shell, Suncor, and Esso.

Her educational accomplishments include a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Microbiology/Immunology and a Masters of Business Administration degree. Reva has managed diploma, applied degrees and degree programs within the School of Construction during her Academic Chair tenure. Becoming the Associate Dean in the School of Manufacturing & Automation in 2017 and then for the School of Transportation in 2018 she added apprenticeship to her portfolio. That is when her interest in promoting women to enter non-traditional careers really turned into action, becoming the Chair for Women in Trades and Technology (WITT) on the SAIT campus. She is also a Board member on the Manufacturers Health and Safety Association (MHSA) in Alberta and was appointed to the role of Dean in the School of Construction in the spring of 2019. Additionally, Reva is a wife, a mother to three young daughters and a doctoral student in the Ed. D. program at Athabasca University.

Josh Taron is the Associate Dean Research and Innovation and an Associate Professor of architecture at the University of Calgary’s School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape (SAPL) where he also co-directs the Laboratory for Integrative Design (LID). His current research focuses on the way in which new modes of automated design, fabrication, and construction can yield new performative effects in the built environment with an emphasis on designing out waste. This work is done in partnership with a variety of disciplines such as computer science, medicine, transportation engineering and city planning. He earned his undergraduate degree in architecture from the University of California, Berkeley and holds a Master of Architecture degree from the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc).

Clint Undseth was 30 years of experience in the construction and technology industries ranging from design to strategy and policy for business, government and not for profit organizations. Throughout his career he has provided strategic and tactical advice to boards and organizations focused on accelerating innovation and is currently Vice President of Innovation at Stuart Olson where he leads the Smart Sustainable Building Program.
Stuart Olson’s vision of the future is one where buildings are intelligently connected, healthy, environmentally proud and financially justified. Leading the innovation team at Stuart Olson, Clint and his group have developed a deep repository of knowledge of technical know-how and the culture of innovation.

His innovation expertise is well-recognized, evidenced by advisory roles he has with entities such as the Richmond Chamber of Commerce Innovation Committee and NAIT’s Construction Innovation and Smart Buildings group. As well, he is actively involved in the Rideau Hall Foundation’s initiative to create a culture of innovation in Canada. He currently studies strategic change management and Design Thinking at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business and in his spare time he studies Eastern Philosophy with Pak Hok Gung Fu.
