As of November 1, 2015 construction projects regulated in accordance with the Alberta Building Code (ABC) must be designed in compliance with the National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings (NECB) 2011 edition. Provincially trained Safety Codes Officers will be certified to handle Energy Codes as part of the permitting, inspection and approvals process. All relevant professionals will be required to comply with the applicable provisions of the adopted NECB, including architects, interior designers, engineers, and surveyors.

Three compliance paths are available (prescriptive, trade-off and performance) requiring either a checklist or report submitted with construction drawings as part of the building permit application. The authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) will require confirmation that your building design complies prior to issuing a building permit. Don’t risk the possibility of a rejection of your building permit resulting in a delay in your project.
