Carbon Based Lifeforms Creating Zero Carbon Buildings

In the last decade, carbon levels increased 20 parts per million (from 380 to 403), the population grew by one billion, global temperature increased by half a degree Celsius, and 25 percent more people moved into our cities.

The world is rapidly changing and will be a very different place by 2030. In this talk, we’ll explore dozens of disparate trends in technology, sustainability and the construction industry and connect the dots to get a glimpse into how we can save the world AND save our businesses at the same time. You’ll learn how to stack emerging trends to forecast opportunities in the green building space.

Climate change is redefining the design parameters and project demands for building design. Uncertainty in the future will require solutions that measure and manage energy, water and health outcomes in innovative ways.

During this energetic and entertaining session, attendees will be engaged in a collaborative process to better address systemic barriers to healthy, high-performing, sustainable, resilient buildings. Eric Corey Freed is an award-winning architect, 11-time author, global speaker and notorious comedian. He has lectured in all 50 states and in 7 countries. As Sustainability Disruptor for Morrison Hershfield, a large Building Science firm that helps thousands of teams achieve high-performing buildings, he identifies solutions to problems most teams didn't know were holding them back. He was also Founding Principal of organicARCHITECT, a visionary design leader in biophilic and regenerative design. As a licensed architect, Eric brings over 25 years of experience in helping architects, builders and homeowners use sustainability to improve the design and operational savings for thousands of buildings around the country. Companies like Autodesk, Pixar, Apple and Lowe’s have hired Eric to help them incorporate deeper sustainability into their businesses. 

Eric is the author of 11 books, including "Green Building & Remodeling for Dummies", a bestseller with over 200,000 copies in print, and "Sustainable School Architecture." His how-to book, “Green$ense for your Home” won the 2011 Outstanding Book Award from the American Society of Journalists and Authors.

Previously, he was Chief Community Officer at EcoDistricts, a nonprofit that helps cities and developers create regenerative, resilient and socially equitable neighborhoods for everyone, and Vice President of the International Living Future Institute, a nonprofit that developed the Living Building Challenge, a global, regenerative, deep green building standard.

Eric has served on the boards & advisory boards of dozens of companies and non-profits throughout his career focused on helping them get "unstuck" through strategy, planning, and implementation for next stage planning. His real skill lies in helping these organizations connect the dots and uncover new opportunities to raise funding, generate revenue, attract customers and streamline operations. He does this through the lens of sustainability: return on investment, lifecycle costing, carbon accounting, social equity, and supply chain optimization.

Eric is considered a leader in the field; named by San Francisco Magazine "Best Green Architect" in 2005; "Best Visionary" in 2007; and "Green Visionary" by 7x7 Magazine in 2008. In 2012, he was named one of the 25 "Best Green Architecture Firms" in the US, and one of the "Top 10 Most Influential Green Architects." In 2017, he was named one of Build's American Architecture Top 25 and the following year, Fixr’s Top 200 Influencers in the Construction Industry. He also holds a prestigious LEED Fellow award from the US Green Building Council.

T02 – Workshop: PM150: Advanced Risk Assessment & Management for Construction and Real Estate Professionals Part 1

Industry defines a successful project as receiving the expected function on the original date and at the price originally committed. When surveyed, most executives, state that what they receive in terms of a project delivery satisfies those requirements only about 25% of the time. Advanced Risk Management is a course which addresses the present state of risk management and presents up to date industry best practices. This course uses a simulation case-study.

At course conclusion, participants will feel comfortable leading risk management evaluations for their projects. They will also have the knowledge and experience to lead their team in building a customized risk model. Dr. Bud Lush will present each sub-process in depth. participants will then be given the opportunity to directly apply the knowledge by completing individual exercises, in addition to a case study in a team setting. This provides a practical approach to explore proven strategies while reinforcing the importance of risk management in a project management environment.

T03 – How to Work Less - Innovation, Efficiency and the Value of Creativity in the Workplace

Rather than rewarding working smart, there is an unhealthy focus in today's workplace on working 'hard' - even if it is less than efficient.

Despite what is known about diminishing returns on hours worked after 50 hour a week, common Industrial work cultures counterintuitively honour greater hours spent at the office, which pushes workers to operate at less than their best selves. Overburdened with inefficiencies, redundancies, and labour-intensive tasks, most workers are supersaturated with tasks that take much time, but offer little value.

Given what is known about the distressing impacts to health, personal relationships, and work quality, a more impactful contribution to your organization would be innovating to produce greater efficiency, as opposed to long and unfruitful hours at the desk. Success shouldn't be measured in sacrifice. Rather, companies should be encouraging, recognizing, and promoting innovation and efficiency. Individuals can promote that agenda by taking the initiative to create efficiency and generate buy-in from management.

As qualified design professionals, we are key contributors to sustainable, healthy, and economically viable spaces. Our scope of work spans construction and project management, design conceptualization, sustainability, health & wellness, and product and material selection. On top of this, we’ve taken on the complex role of “corporate strategist” consulting on productivity, culture, branding and more. As the demands of the market change and industry continues to evolve, we must ask ourselves how do we define our position in the building industry and advocate for a scope of work that enables us to best service our clients?

Addressing this and other key questions currently impacting the state of the interior design profession, this group of esteemed panelists will discuss the challenges and opportunities that we as Interior Designers face. Examining the state of the industry in context of the local, national and international landscape, panelists will expand on the shifting market demands impacting the building industry, narrowing down on the direct impacts being realized within the design vertical, expanding on what we can do as design practitioners to solidify our positioning within the market. Tony Brenders is the Chief Executive Officer of the Interior Designers of Canada (IDC), the national advocacy body promoting Interior Design within Canada and across the globe. As a senior executive, he brings more than 25 years of experience.

With Tony at the helm since 2016, IDC have streamlined their Board structure, strengthened their financial footing, launched their inaugural National Symposium (an annual event), and led a joint Impact Summit, with their American counterparts.

Prior to joining IDC, Tony was responsible for setting up and running the largest regulatory body in North America - The Ontario College of Trades, with more than 300,000 members (journeypersons, apprentices and employers).

He has significant experience in organizational set-up, structural transformation, change management, government & stakeholder relations and strategic communications.

Tony’s formal post-secondary training was in land use planning, and more recently in corporate governance and public executive leadership.

A seasoned designer on the Calgary scene, Jacqui McFarland has ‘seen it all’ in terms of design trends and the way our economic, social, and political climate has shaped the way we design. An award-winning designer with more than three decades of experience, Jacqui’s career has spanned a number of realms, including commercial design, academia, visual communication design, business owner, and now Senior Interior Design Associate with Stantec Architecture.

Jacqui received a Faculty of Distinction award from Mount Royal University where she served as Department Chair of the Interior Design program, as well as two Presidential Citations from the Interior Design Educators Council. She presently serves on the Council for Interior Design Accreditation Standards Committee, and a Board Member for Calgary Reads, which is dedicated to helping children read with confidence and joy.

Jerilyn is an interior designer, an artist and a philanthropist with a strong passion and commitment to redefining the built environment. She is all about elevating the energy and vibration of space. Jerilyn reflects a company’s culture and brand in their interiors enabling their space to become their business card allowing them to “walk their talk”.

Jerilyn Wright & Associates Interior Design Consultants has recently created distinctive interiors for PetroChina Canada, Scotiabank, Petronas, Norton Rose, Avli Condo’s and Bellissima. T07 – Building Resilience for the Future Climate – Alberta Infrastructure’s Technical Design Requirements

Alberta Infrastructure (AI) develops and maintains industry guidelines and specifications to ensure the best possible outcome for capital projects. These guidelines, known as Technical Design Requirements (TDR), provide industry with a comprehensive framework for building efficiency, health, life cycle cost, and environmental sustainability.

With all Provinces and Territories working to build resilience to climate change, there has been question of whether the TDR will keep Alberta’s infrastructure resilient in the next gen. climate. To ensure the safety of all Albertans, AI has undertaken a study to better understand whether the TDR will hold up to future climate change impacts (hotter weather, changing precipitation patterns, increased frequency in severe weather events such as wildfires and flooding).

This seminar will present the findings of this study, expanding on the rigorous requirements that tested strong and true in ensuring the efficiency and resilience of public buildings. The presenters will also touch on the recommendations made to further improve the resilience of our building stock, including: using a project weather file to determine energy needs and corresponding design; increasing supports to achieve net zero by 2030; and enhancing measures to mitigate flood risk.

Alyssa began her career working in the non-profit sector, and moved into Government after completing her Master of Public Administration at the University of Victoria. Alyssa has been with Alberta Infrastructure since 2014.

Matt is a Chartered Environmentalist, a Professional Engineer, LEED AP and LEED Fellow. He has over 25 years of experience in sustainability in the built environment including energy efficiency, renewable energy and green building certification. Matt has expertise that is second to none when it comes to

T08 – Architecture Keynote: Challenging Typologies – What Does a Typical Building Look Like in 21st Century Canada?

Amongst industry, there’s a common misunderstanding between building PROGRAMS and building TYPOLOGIES. A building program is defined by the owner’s requirement. That could be, for example, an office or residential building of a certain size and complexity. But what that doesn’t tell us, is whether that program is hosted by a building that is light or dark, tall or flat, iconic or low-key. One can imagine a program such as a student classroom being hosted by a shaded box with limited views, being substantially different than a naturally illuminated box with a terrace or a garden attached to it. Or for example, a place of worship being hosted by an 8-foot tall space versus 80-foot tall space of divine scale that induces the experience and helps us connect with another dimension of life.

This keynote will take a different view on the way we build contemporary architecture in Alberta. Speakers will challenge conventional typologies, a practice that is often disregarded in building planning and design. Presenters will profile examples that have used purpose first to create a different engagement in space, inspiring healthy and sustainable buildings. Providing a future forward look, presenters will highlight the role this practice will play in advancing the state of architecture and the makeup of our communities.

Jason Johnson has practiced and taught architecture in North and South America and Europe. He is a founding partner of the Laboratory for Integrative Design at the University of Calgary and has published and exhibited design work related to research in the areas of responsive architecture, generative design, digital fabrication and integrated techniques. He is the co-author of Digital Design Exercises for Architecture Students a primer on generative design strategies for the begining design student.

Nima is a registered architect and a lecturer at John H Daniels faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design at University of Toronto as well as an adjunct professor at Cooper Union’s Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture in New York City, teaching design Studios. Having studied under a lineage of influential voices and pedagogues within the discourse of architecture his interest in architecture is mainly focused on the relationship between geometry, structure and build-ablity and has focused his teaching and practice along that trajectory.

He has a Master of Architecture degree from University of Tehran and a Master of Urban Design from University of Toronto where his thesis with George Baird as the advisor won the prestigious Heather Reisman Gold Medal of Design in 2005. Nima has worked for a range of local and international practices including Baird Sampson Neuert Architects and became a licensed architect with the Ontario Association of Architects in 2009 and established Ja Architecture Studio with his partner.

As part of his work at Ja, Nima has realized a range of small and medium scale projects as test grounds for the themes of the practice and has also worked on a range of international competitions; the firms’ projects have won awards and have been widely published.

A graduate with honours from the Master of Architecture program at the University of Calgary in 2001 and recipient of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada medal, Ben Klumper is a principal and co-founder of MoDA and currently sits on the Council of the Alberta Association of Architects and is the Co-Chair of the AAA’s Advocacy Committee. Ben has been a sessional instructor at the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Environmental Design where he ran the architecture program’s Comprehensive Studio IV for two years and is a sought-after guest critic and mentor for intern architects.

Ben was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and spent his first 24 years there, receiving a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the University of Manitoba in 1993. He moved to Calgary in 1997 to further his studies in architecture, which included a term abroad in Barcelona, Spain and Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Having worked in offices in Winnipeg and Calgary, Ben brings over 23 years of experience to the firm and his consistent meshing of strong design sensibility, attention to detail and technical construction knowledge results in the efficient realization of creative architecture.

Colin Neufeld is an architect and partner at 5468796 Architecture. In its 10 years of practice, the firm’s modest projects have received every significant Canadian design award and a number of important international prizes, often alongside large institutional projects — the Houston-based Rice Design Alliance recently stated that they “truly believe 5468796 to be one of the most talented young design firms worldwide.”

Colin obtained his Bachelor of Environmental Design degree and Master of Architecture degree from the University of Manitoba Faculty of Architecture (FAUM). In addition to practice, Colin has taught design as an instructor at the FAUM since 2011.

Colin has completed extensive work on heritage revitalization and housing projects, including The Avenue on Portage and its main floor tenant, Manitoba Start, as well as Bloc_10 Condominiums, which has received an RAIC Award of Excellence for Innovation, an Architectural Review Emerging Architecture Award and a Governor General’s Medal in Architecture. His most recent and ongoing work includes the Sterling Building and the adaptive reuse and redesign of the James Avenue Pumping Station, as well as 200 Portage Ave, located at Winnipeg’s iconic Portage and Main intersection.

Vedran Skopac believes in DISTINCT, DIVERSE and DYNAMIC architecture – the three sacred D’s of design. His idea of ‘Emotionally Sustainable Architecture’ is focused on building socially sensible communities conducive to thrive of human spirit.

Vedran is an international architect who joined ‘njiric+njiric’ group (see El Croquis No. 114[II]), and delivered work that is best captured in prestigious monographs and publications such as MARK, and DOMUS, and most notably in the international magazine 2G no.57 [Editorial Gustavo Gili, 2011] under the ‘njiric+ arhitekti’ practice.

Currently living in Edmonton and being part of the Manasc Isaac Architects group, Drawing Room artists group, and volunteering in NGO’s that sponsor and settle Syrian Refugees; he is actively building sustainable and contemporary communities.

Vedran’s most recognized design on Canadian soil, The Mosaic Centre, was completed in February 2015 and is the crown jewel of sustainable building in Alberta, becoming the first Net Zero energy commercial office building in Alberta — an example of Alberta’s oil and gas abundance igniting innovative, sustainable projects. With this project he helped steward the Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) movement in Alberta — a contract model that is gaining momentum in a marketplace desperately seeking a Better Way.

Eager to learn and share knowledge Vedran is helping teach in four Canadian schools for architecture and design (UofT John H. Daniels in Toronto, UofC EVDS in Calgary, RAIC Syllabus in Edmonton, and UofA Art&Design in Edmonton).

Other notable projects include Red Deer College Student Residence [expected 2018]; and The City of Justice in Zagreb [expected 2020] – a 1.5 mio square feet [USD$300 mio] winning competition proposal Vedran and two of of his partners delivered to help Government of Croatia fight corruption in judicial system, and become a more livable place for all Croatian citizens.

Around the world, policy makers and institutions have established targets for Net Zero building construction. But how do we get there? Space heating continues to comprise the majority of energy consumed by our buildings, despite gains in the efficiency of mechanical systems. Designing building envelopes that keep heat from escaping in the first place is the next step in significantly reducing energy consumption in buildings, in turn resulting in building energy demand that can more feasibly be met by renewables. The Passive House Standard provides a roadmap for this improvement.

With the current office vacancy rate sitting at 27% adaptive reuse and space adaptability has become a very popular conversation in Calgary as of late. From this conversation, a speculation has stemmed that old office buildings can’t be repurposed into alternate asset types, but is this really true?

This presentation will address this exact question. Taking a case study approach the presenters will explore the reality of converting old office space into new multifamily residential. Speaking from firsthand experience, the presenters will expand on these conversions from a development and construction perspective addressing the feasibility of such projects. Attendees will also learn about the unique challenges that arise from a project of this nature and how to better plan and prepare for them.

Industry defines a successful project as receiving the expected function on the original date and at the price originally committed. When surveyed, most executives, state that what they receive in terms of a project delivery satisfies those requirements only about 25% of the time. Advanced Risk Management is a course which addresses the present state of risk management and presents up to date industry best practices. This course uses a simulation case-study.

At course conclusion, participants will feel comfortable leading risk management evaluations for their projects. They will also have the knowledge and experience to lead their team in building a customized risk model. Dr. Bud Lush will present each sub-process in depth. participants will then be given the opportunity to directly apply the knowledge by completing individual exercises, in addition to a case study in a team setting. Kae Shummoogum P.Eng has an Engineering Degree from City University in London, England and came to Canada 38 years ago. He founded Gasonic Instruments 33 years ago to service a growing need for hazardous gas detection and indoor air quality monitoring. He founded EnviroRentals in 1995 to rent environmental testing instruments for both indoor and outdoor environmental consultants. He became passionate about reducing his carbon footprint and set up several business units under the rebrand name of Gasonic Group to pursue energy efficiency goals as well as health and safety of building air quality. Although he makes his living monitoring the toxic gases from vehicles inside parkades, he has been driving hybrid and fully electric vehicles for the last 20 years. He is often asked by schools to teach grade 5 students about 'The Future of Mobility'. He has been invited to show his Tesla electric vehicle in front of Calgary City Hall to teach hundreds of school kids about EV technology. His concern about mercury filled fluorescent lights ending in the landfill and pollute the air and water or the next generation has led him to search for a proper recycle plant and develop the logistics to collect spent lights from the schools, universities and municipalities with sustainability concern for the next generation. Thousands of lights have been completely and properly recycle.

T18 – Emerging Solutions – Leveraging Sustainability Certifications & Energy Labelling Towards Carbon in Existing Buildings

Our existing building stock has significant potential for energy savings and carbon reduction. Commercially available sustainability certifications for existing buildings such as LEED EBOM, BOMA BEST, WELL, and Fitwel standards provide defined framework and metrics for targeting sustainability in existing buildings. This presentation will discuss several case studies where these sustainability certifications were considered for retrofit implications, capital and operating cost, and additional benefits to building users.

The presenter will expand upon these and other examples:

  • The CORE shopping center in downtown Calgary - the first building of its kind to pursue LEED EBOM certification and to use the Energy Jumpstart path to meet the LEED EBOM energy prerequisite
  • Centre 10 - a high-rise office building in downtown Calgary that currently pursuing LEED EBOM certification and conducting re-commissioning to identify suitable retrofit opportunities 
  • The Harry Hays Government of Canada Building - pursuing LEED EBOM certification under the federal government's low carbon initiative and has conducted ASHRAE level 2 energy audits to identify energy saving opportunities
  • The City of Edmonton Municipal Buildings - on-going efforts to conduct ASHRAE level 2 energy audits and feasibility studies for LEED EBOM and BOMA BEST certifications on energy intensive municipal buildings

These case studies aim to inform how different building types may find suitable retrofit opportunities and sustainability certifications towards a low carbon future.

T19 – Unlocking the Potential of Digital Project Delivery with Alberta Infrastructure

Responsible for a portfolio of approximately 2000 buildings, Alberta Infrastructure (AI) must ensure maximum project efficiency and the accurate and timely management of asset information. With this being a critical piece in infrastructure and building planning and management, AI decided to explore Digital Project Delivery as a tool to achieve this. In March of 2018, after leading a Digital Project Delivery working group inclusive of key industry stakeholders, AI released their Digital Project Delivery Requirements as an important first step towards digital transformation.

As the rest of industry continues to embrace digital platforms as a tool to enhance their own projects, practitioners are looking to Alberta Infrastructure to learn from example. This session features key individuals that were involved in the development and deployment of AI’s Digital Project Delivery Requirements. Speaking to the business opportunity that Digital Project Delivery presented, this session will expand on the process and key considerations that were accounted for in the establishment of realistic and achievable Requirements. The presenters will expand on the opportunities that this technology provides throughout the different stages of the project and asset lifecycle, expanding on the challenges realized and lessons learned to date.

This presentation will demonstrate how affordable, sustainable and accessible homes can be achieved simultaneously, without trade-offs. The presenters will explain how this can be accomplished by illustrating the various designs, materials, construction methods, and technologies available.

This presentation will help foster a culture of innovation in the housing industry to encourage adoption practices that ensure true affordability that is accessible and sustainable.

Elizabeth Huculak will focus on the affordability aspect of the presentation. She will demonstrate the need for affordable housing, and how improved design materials and building practices can lower shelter costs, improve homeowners’ quality of life, and improve housing security. Moreover, she will discuss long-term affordability aspect of accessible and sustainable homes.

Darby Lee Young will then shed light on the need for universally accessible design in homes and communities by demonstrating how disabilities can affect almost everyone, in different ways and for different periods of time. She will also focus on the actual implementation of accessible design in homes, and how it can save homeowners money in the long run.

Finally, Melanie Ross will discuss various approaches to ensure the adoption of high performance sustainability measures, to not only help the save the environment, but also to help homeowners save money.

Elizabeth has over 10 years in senior leadership and executive management positions in dynamic, results-oriented organizations.Her experience and expertise in governmental, not-for-profit and entrepreneurial organizations in finance, housing, construction and real estate development, and clean energy development and deployment serves as a platform to inform her current work with AHCC.

Elizabeth has held a variety of positions with leading companies and non-profits such as Decentralised Energy Canada, well-known residential developers, and spent 15 years of her early career with the CMHC. She has also contributed her expertise on several boards and committees.

Darby Lee Young is a former para-alpine ski racer, who was born with mild cerebral palsy and a passion for removing barriers. She created Level Playing Field (LPF) in November 2015 to mitgate the barriers she and her team face every day.

Darby has over a decade of experience working as an accessibility strategist. She is an expert in universal design, has a deep understanding of building codes and drawings, and has contributed to the success of removing barriers at a municipal level, provincial level and across North America. Darby sat on the City of Calgary's Advisory Commitee on Accessibility (ACA) from 2011-2015 and was the commitee's co-chair for two years. She also represented the City of Calgary at the Internatonal Summit on Accessibility. In June of 2017, Darby was appointed to a three-year term on the Premier's Council on the Status of Persons with Disabilities.

Darby works to incorporate barrier-free design features in new builds and conducts accessibility reviews on proposed and existing facilities. She is creating a more inclusive and inviting built environment for everyone.

Leading the sustainable building team at Integral Group, Melanie supports a wide range of projects ranging from LEED, WELL, FitWel and other third party certifications to energy management and existing building performance, while managing a growing portfolio in sustainability planning and policy development.

Melanie's ten+ years of experience with recognized architecture, planning and engineering firms has brought her a deeper understanding of the industry and a respect for various stakeholder viewpoints. Her work as a CaGBC Review Team and Materials TAG member and Education Faculty member gives her further insight into the strategic and technical nuances of LEED projects. With applied experience in marketing and communications, Melanie drives her teams to embrace an integrated design process to deliver for the clients' needs.

Melanie was appointed to the WELL Building Standard teaching faculty and has delivered several workshops and presentations on the topic of health and wellness in buildings. She was also appointed to the CaGBC WELL Taskforce, working to identify the challenges for Canadian market adoption of the standard. Lastly, she serves as Chair of the CaGBC Alberta Chapter Leadership Board and as Director on the AHCC board.
